Unknown winner: Esperanza Spalding won the Grammy for Best New Artist at the award show last night - she was presented the award by Jewel and John Legend
She left thousand of Justin Bieber fans crying into their breakfast this morning after beating the pop star to a coveted award at the Grammys last night.
And the teen heartthrob's fans, known as Beliebers, upset at the decision took to Spalding's Wikipedia page to vent their anger over the unknown taking away the prize.
'Justin Bieber deserved it.. go die in a hole. Who the heck are you anyway?', was the sentiment of one of his fans in messages posted online which have now been removed.
Esperanza is also now receiving death threats, joining Kim Kardashian and Selena Gomez who received them for getting too close to their idol.
Upset: Justin Bieber was the favourite to win Best New Artist and said he was 'disappointed' at losing the trophy but congratulated Spalding backstage
Bieber admitted backstage that he was upset at losing the trophy: 'I had no clue what was going to happen; I worked really hard these past few years and you know, I'm not going to lie - I was disappointed'.
But he was a perfect gentleman back stage and hugged the winner and said he will try again for the Grammys next year.
Life-changing: Jazz musician Esperanza arrived at the Grammys a virtual unknown and left with the coveted trophy
Spalding did not feel bad about the upset and said of her competition backstage: 'He'll have many more years and many more nominations, so he'll be straight'.
But the Best New Artist winner has also left many asking the question - 'Just who is Esperanza Spalding?'
Although not strictly a new artist as she released her debut album Junjo in 2006, Spalding has received great critical acclaim for her unique voice and musicality.
And in a commercial music world dominated by pop and RnB, Spalding said that there should be some room for jazz too.
Well-liked: Esperanza has received great critical acclaim and praise from Stevie Wonder and Prince
'Hopefully people will realise that there's talent in the jazz world that they didn't know about', she said.
'There's so much music evolving and rocking all over the world. If [the public] want to discover more jazz people, that would be great', Esperanza added.
The Portland, Oregon native beat out Justin Bieber, Drake, Mumford and Sons and Florence and the Machine to take the top honour sending social media sites into a tailspin - especially from fans of Bieber.
The 26-year-old grew up in what she calls a 'pretty scary' part of Portland, Oregon where she was raised with her brother in a single parent home.
She describes her heritage as a mixture of African-American, Native American, Welsh and Spanish.
Spalding learned to play the violin when she was five-years-old and spent the next ten years playing with the Chamber Music Society of Oregon which she left as a concertmaster.
She learned to play many other instruments including the guitar, oboe and clarinet but it was when she picked up the double bass that she found her calling.
The singer attended the Berklee School of Music where also she became a professor after graduating at 20.
Her latest album Chamber Music Society is a blend of her classical roots and jazz sound.
